Description
Four ounces of Crompton Magnesium Stearate D.Magnesium stearate is in widespread use as gelling, sanding and anti-sticking agents,
stabiliser, lubricant, emulsifier and plasticiser for polymers, ...
Oil Paint Additives
-Pigment dispersion and wetting, and pigment suspension.
Stearates are usually added from 1 to 2% of the total weight of the pigment in the formulation.
Some manufacturers add more while others add the least possible while still maintaining
effectiveness.
A common and extremely effective lubricant. Works in concentrations from 0.5 - 5%.
Although, it is best to use this lubricant in the lowest effective concentration.
Blending times should be limited. Overblending can cause compaction problems.
Magnesium stearate is a neutral magnesium soap with special hydrophobic specification. Its is a compound of magnesium with variable proportions of stearic and palmitic acids. It can act as a hydrophobic agent in fire-fighting and wax and grease industries. It can be used as anti-static agent in textile and dry-cleaning industries and as lubricant in graphic pen production.
Detailed applications including:
In coating industry , it is used as a flatting , thickening and suspending agent in paints , varnishes , lacquers and as a hardner in enamels and varnishes .
In preparation of inks , use of these material increases the pigment dispersion , retards or prevents the settling , increases viscosity and shortens the oil length of the pigment .
In the manufacture of face and body powders , this chemical is used as a base because of its fine particle size , smoothness , property of adherence to body skin and water repellency .
In candles , it is used as a hardening agent .

Magnesium stearate (Mg (C12H33O2)2) is a fine white odourless bulky powder, probably the
finest of the metallic stearates, with a very high covering capacity. It has rounder particle
shape than does, say, zinc stearate and is a muctuous soapy powder adherent to the skin, and
is rated as dermatologically innocuous being neither a sensitizer nor a primary irritant. It
can be decomposed by acids, and can exist as the hydrate. Its physical characteristics have
been examined closely.
Solubility:
Soluble in hot polyolefins, turpentine, benzene, toluene, xylenes, carbon
tetrachloride, vegetable oils, oleic acid, mineral oils and waxes. Insoluble or very
sparingly soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, ethyl esters, amyl acetate, and ketones.
